Introduction: Love in the Fog
The phone rings after midnight, and your body answers before your hand does. For a moment, you do not know who is calling. You know only what a late call has come to mean. A ride. An apology. A hospital. A promise made with the urgent sincerity of someone who may not remember it tomorrow. You look at the name on the screen and feel love, anger, dread, and responsibility arrive together. Life near addiction can train a person to live on alert. You read a face before you hear the words. You notice the missing cash, the locked bathroom door, the slurred consonant, the unexplained absence, the car returning too late or not at all. Ordinary peace begins to feel irresponsible, as though vigilance alone keeps disaster away. Then Sunday comes. People sing about freedom. Someone asks how the family is doing. You give the practiced answer because the truthful one would take too long and might not be safe in the hallway. You may have heard counsel that sounded spiritual but left you carrying more confusion: pray harder, trust more, submit, forgive, stop enabling, cut them off, bring them home, give them one more chance. Each sentence may contain a fragment of wisdom. None is a complete map. This book begins with a simpler truth: you can love a person deeply without becoming the manager of that person's sobriety.
