Introduction: The Bill on the Counter
A bill can lie unopened for days and still seem to fill the room. It waits on the kitchen counter while breakfast is made around it. It follows you to work without moving. It sits between spouses who are discussing almost everything except the thing both of them can feel. At night, the number behind the envelope becomes larger in the imagination, acquiring interest that no lender has charged. By morning, you may be tired from a conversation you never actually had. Money is never only arithmetic. It carries memories, loyalties, fears, hopes, and judgments. A bank balance can feel like a verdict on adulthood. A purchase can become a brief rebellion against deprivation. A gift can be an act of worship or an attempt to purchase approval. A budget can be a wise plan, a weapon of control, or a page avoided because it appears to know too much about us. Some readers come to this book with adequate income and persistent anxiety. Others face a plain shortage that no amount of positive thinking will solve. Some have debt from emergency surgery, job loss, school, business failure, addiction, impulsive spending, or simply the widening distance between ordinary wages and ordinary costs. Some are ashamed of having too little. Others are uneasy about having much. Many have received financial teaching in church that was either so abstract it could not survive Monday morning or so certain about material blessing that suffering began to look like spiritual failure.
