Introduction: The Life Between Us

Some loneliness is loud. It arrives as an empty chair, a silent phone, or a weekend with nowhere to go. Other loneliness is well dressed. It sits in a crowded sanctuary, answers messages, attends meetings, and knows many names. It can live inside a marriage, a ministry team, a workplace, or a full contact list. A person may be surrounded and still wonder whether anyone would notice if the honest version of them stopped showing up. Public-health leaders have described social disconnection as a serious concern, not merely a private mood. The United States surgeon general's advisory on social connection gathered evidence that relationships shape health and well-being across the life span (Office of the Surgeon General, 2023). This book does not turn friendship into medicine or promise that companionship can solve every form of suffering. It begins with a humbler truth: human beings were not made to carry life as sealed containers. Scripture opens with a God who creates by generous speech and calls people into communion with himself and one another. Israel is formed as a people, not a collection of unrelated spiritual consumers. Jesus gathers disciples. The early church eats, prays, gives, learns, argues, forgives, travels, and suffers together. The New Testament's repeated phrases-one another, together, members of one body-make solitary Christianity difficult to imagine.
