Introduction: The Exhaustion of Being Easy to Approve
Some forms of exhaustion do not come from doing too much. They come from being too many versions of yourself. You are cheerful with the person who needs cheerfulness, untroubled with the person who cannot tolerate need, endlessly available to the person who interprets delay as rejection, and impressive around the person whose admiration feels like oxygen. You edit your opinions before speaking. You scan faces for weather. You apologize for taking time, needing help, changing your mind, or occupying emotional space. By evening, nothing dramatic may have happened, yet you feel as if you have spent the day carrying a tray through a crowded room without spilling anyone's feelings. People-pleasing is often described as excessive niceness. That description is too shallow. At its center is not kindness but governance. Whose response is allowed to decide whether you have done well? Whose disappointment becomes a verdict?
Which audience has the power to name you good, safe, faithful, lovable, or enough?
