Introduction: The Woman Who Has Not Vanished
There are seasons the church knows how to name. We bless babies, commission graduates, celebrate marriages, pray over new ministries, and honour retirements. Yet a woman can cross one of the most consequential thresholds of adult life while everyone around her behaves as though nothing is happening. Her body changes its rhythms. Sleep becomes unreliable. Heat arrives from nowhere. A mind once quick with names may pause at an ordinary word. Desire shifts. Grief rises without asking permission. She may be caring for children, parents, a congregation, colleagues, or all four at once. At the same time, she is expected to remain competent, cheerful, available, and discreet. Often she does. She carries on. That does not mean she is untouched. Perimenopause and menopause are not spiritual failures, embarrassments, or evidence that a woman's usefulness is receding. They belong to embodied life in a world God loves. The transition can be mild or disruptive, straightforward or medically complex. It may be welcomed, mourned, or both. No single story can carry every woman. But silence should not be the price of belonging. The World Health Organization describes menopause as one point in a continuum of life and notes that the transition can affect physical, emotional, mental, and social well-being (World Health Organization, 2024). That breadth matters. A changing body meets a whole life: prayer, work, marriage, singleness, friendship, caregiving, money, memory, confidence, worship, and hope. A symptom list alone cannot address all of that. Neither can a Bible verse used as a lid.
