Introduction: The Kingdom View of Wealth
The modern conversation about wealth is often polarized. One voice says wealth is evidence of divine blessing and should be pursued boldly. Another says wealth is inherently corrupting and serious Christians should distrust it. Scripture is more demanding than either slogan. It treats wealth as a real good that can feed families, support worship, protect the vulnerable, build cities, create work, and fund mission. It also treats wealth as spiritually dangerous because it can generate pride, false security, injustice, and forgetfulness of God. The central biblical category is stewardship. A steward does not despise resources; a steward receives responsibility. A steward plans because the Owner’s property matters. A steward gives because ownership is not absolute. A steward refuses corrupt gain because results do not justify disobedience. A steward can enjoy provision with gratitude and can also release resources when love requires it. Financial well-being research provides a practical vocabulary that overlaps with stewardship. The CFPB describes financial well-being through control over daily finances, capacity to absorb shocks, progress toward goals, and freedom of choice (CFPB, 2023). The OECD similarly treats financial literacy as knowledge, skills, attitudes, and behaviours that support sound decisions and well-being (OECD, 2023). Those are not biblical definitions, but they remind us that good financial life is not reducible to high income. Margin, resilience, competence, and choice matter. This book develops six movements.
