Introduction: From Hearing to Helping
A revelation can feel important to the person who receives it. Yet the spiritual value of an impression is not established merely by intensity. Christian ministry asks what the impression means, whether it aligns with Scripture, whether it should be shared, how it should be worded, and what fruit it is likely to produce. The journey from hearing to helping is therefore a journey of stewardship. The phrase “from revelation to edification” describes that journey. Revelation, in the ordinary charismatic sense used throughout this book, refers to an impression, burden, Scripture, image, dream, sense, or insight that a believer believes may be prompted by God. Edification refers to the strengthening of persons and communities in truth, faith, hope, love, holiness, freedom, and Christlike maturity. The latter gives purpose and ethical shape to the former. This book repeatedly distinguishes perception, interpretation, application, and delivery. That distinction is essential because a sincere perception can be misinterpreted, and a reasonable interpretation can be misapplied. A good application can also be communicated badly. Mature prophetic practice therefore invites testing at every stage. The central proposition is simple: the more a prophetic word resembles the heart and ways of Jesus, the more it should strengthen people toward faithful life in Him. This means that love is not the soft alternative to truth. Love is the atmosphere in which truth becomes pastoral. Humility is not uncertainty about God; it is honesty about ourselves. Accountability is not unbelief; it is a form of stewardship.
