Introduction: Forgiveness Without Blindness

Forgiveness is a holy word, but holy words can be handled carelessly. A wounded person tells the truth about betrayal, and someone answers before the sentence is finished: "You have to forgive." A family discovers years of deception, and pressure arrives to restore appearances before repentance has grown roots. A church learns that a leader has abused power, and concern for mercy becomes an argument against investigation. A survivor is asked to prove spiritual maturity by returning to an unsafe relationship. The command to forgive is real. So are the biblical commands to tell the truth, protect the vulnerable, confront sin, practice justice, and test the fruit of repentance. Scripture does not ask us to obey one part of God's will by violating another. This book is for people who want mercy without blindness. You may be nursing an old resentment, trying to recover after betrayal, deciding whether trust can be rebuilt, or wrestling with anger toward someone who will never apologize. You may also be the person who caused harm and now wants a path deeper than regret. The situations differ, but the central question is shared: How can we participate in God's forgiving grace without pretending that evil is harmless?

Open-eyed forgiveness begins by looking in two directions. It looks steadily at the wrong-what happened, who was responsible, what was damaged, and what protection or repair is needed. It also looks toward God, whose mercy is neither sentimental nor dishonest. At the cross, sin is not minimized. It is exposed as so grave that reconciliation costs the self-giving love of Christ. Yet grace is offered so freely that no repentant sinner can purchase or boast in it.
