Introduction: Hope Large Enough for the Whole Story

Many people can believe in God’s power when the testimony ends quickly: prayer was offered, symptoms disappeared, and the next report confirmed recovery. The harder work begins when the story does not move that way. Treatment continues. Pain remains. A promised date passes. A new symptom appears. The person who was once surrounded by prayer partners finds that everyone else has returned to ordinary life. Biblical hope must be large enough for the whole story. It must make room for the God who heals and the God who sustains; for James 5 and 2 Corinthians 12; for the empty tomb and the still-groaning creation of Romans 8. Any theology that can only function in the moment of breakthrough is too small for the Bible and too fragile for real pastoral care. The central claim of this book is simple: faith can remain alive when the body still hurts. It may become quieter, humbler, more truthful, and less interested in performance. It may learn to ask better questions. It may discover that receiving help is not defeat, that medicine is not unbelief, that lament is not rebellion, and that resurrection—not symptom control—is the final horizon of Christian embodiment. The chapters ahead do not promise an explanation for every illness. They offer a way of walking: tell the truth, pray boldly, receive wise care, test spiritual claims, protect the conscience, stay connected, make room for grief, and keep Christ at the center. That is not a lesser faith. It is faith trained for a road longer than we expected.
