Introduction: A Church for a New Generation
The phrase 'the next generation' can create unnecessary fear. It can make leaders imagine a demographic crisis to manage instead of people to disciple. The New Testament gives a better picture. The church is a household, a body, a temple, a flock, a priesthood, and a missionary people. Every new generation is invited into that same story. The central conviction of this book is simple: relevance is not the enemy of faithfulness when relevance means understandable, compassionate, culturally aware communication. Dilution happens when the church changes the substance of the gospel to gain approval. Contextualization happens when the church removes unnecessary barriers so that the substance can be heard clearly. Therefore, the strongest strategy for reaching Gen Z and young adults is not to look younger. It is to become healthier. Healthy churches tell the truth, listen well, protect people, create belonging, teach Scripture, practice prayer, form character, share leadership, serve neighbors, use technology wisely, and send disciples into the world. The chapters are organized as a journey. Part I establishes the unchanging gospel and the realities of a changing generation. Part II focuses on belonging and trust. Part III addresses communication and difficult questions. Part IV moves into everyday discipleship. Part V develops emerging leaders. Part VI builds systems that help generational renewal remain sustainable.
